Series of landslides that came down in the hamlets of Mundakkai, Chooralmala, Attamala, and Noolpuzha have caused massive devastation. Villages have been completely wiped out. Over 282 people have been reported dead as of August 1, and many are still missing. Torrential rains are continuing in the region disrupting the rescue and relief efforts.
Many families have lost everything including their breadwinners. The State government has created nearly 90 temporary relief centers for the survivors. The immeasurable loss of the families can never be compensated, but at the time of their gravest tragedy we all need to stand with them in solidarity and support them as much as we can.
Rise Against Hunger India together with some of its field partners located in Wayanad are providing relief supplies to the affected families. Our first set of relief items (food packets, ready-to-eat snacks, hygiene kits, raincoats/umbrella and other items) are on their way. We aim to support 2,700 people with immediate relief for the next 6 weeks or so and once things settle down, help these families in restoration of their livelihoods. We are starting our response efforts with our internal funds and would need support from our well-wishers and partners to continue.
