Stop Hunger Now has opened meal-packaging affiliates in Bangalore, India, and in Indianapolis, and will open a warehouse in Pittsburgh, PA and an affiliate in Peru in 2015.
With those three new affiliates, Stop Hunger Now will be operating in 19 U.S. cities and six countries, including South Africa, Malaysia, Italy and Philippines.
Bangalore Gets Meal-Packaging Center
Stop Hunger Now India is open for business. To celebrate the launch of the new Stop Hunger Now affiliate, 150 employee volunteers from Broadcom Corporation and SanDisk Corporation packaged 45,000 meals at Broadcom’s Bangalore Campus, with The Rotary Bangalore IT Club providing logistical and community support.
Since 2013, Stop Hunger Now has packaged and distributed over 320,000 meals to children and families in Bangalore, New Delhi and Kashmir, but the cost of the program was high without an in-country facility and director.
With a location and permanent staff in Bangalore, Stop Hunger Now India will be able to package millions of meals to benefit local feeding programs in schools, orphanages, medical clinics and vocational training programs throughout the country.
Dola Mohapatra has been hired as executive director for Stop Hunger Now India.
The meal-packaging program is expected to cover all its costs within 12 to 18 months through the per-meal donations that volunteer groups raise to package the meals.
Indianapolis Residents Package Meals
Indianapolis has become the 19th U.S. city that is home to a Stop Hunger Now affiliate.
Stop Hunger Now Indianapolis opened its new warehouse in January with an event in partnership with Merchandise Warehouse and LifePoint Church that packaged over 100,000 meals.
Merchandise Warehouse is providing a central warehouse location for Stop Hunger Now Indianapolis to serve Indiana and the Midwest.
Volunteers for Stop Hunger Now in Indianapolis and nearby communities now have packaged over 500,000 meals.
Brandon Faulkner, regional program director for Stop Hunger Now, attended the kickoff event in Indianapolis, along with Allen Renquist, Chief Programs Officer, and Mickey Horner, director of expansion and program innovation.
Peru Next Stop for Stop Hunger Now
Stop Hunger Now will open an office this summer in Lima, Peru.
Stop Hunger Now Peru aims to provide 600,000 meals in its first 12 months — through June 2016 — and then 1 million meals each of the next two years.
The office, the first Latin American affiliate for Stop Hunger Now, will work to help address poverty in Peru, a country of 30 million people in which three in 10 people live in poverty.
The office also will work to support the national policy of advancing collaboration and corporate social responsibility, and help public, private, education and civic organizations engage and inspire volunteerism among employers and members.
Stop Hunger Now has provided over 140 million meals in 15 countries. In South America and Latin America, Stop Hunger Now has shipped nearly 28.9 million meals in 11 countries, including over 570,000 meals in Peru.
