6 months After the Wayanad Landslide!

Massive Landslides Cause Severe Damage in Wayanad

In August 2024, several villages in Wayanad District suffered unprecedented humanitarian tragedy as series of landslides completed wiped out several villages. More than 500 deaths were reported. Economic systems of the entire region including in the upstream villages that were not directly hit by the landslides, got completely destroyed.

Rise Against Hunger India Send Relief Supplies Immediately

Within 24 hours of the landslides, Rise Against Hunger India dispatched relief materials (food packets, ready-to-eat snacks, hygiene kits, raincoats, umbrella and other items) to support the affected families. For nearly 6 weeks, in multiple lots, additional relief materials were sent to the area. Initially, the relief items were provided through the camps and temporary shelters where government agencies had accommodated the families.

Family Support Kits Organized

The affected villages were declared unsafe by the Government for families to go back. Government has planned to relocate the families from the affected region to a new area, but getting the new settlements ready would take about 12 to 18 months. Consequently, families staying in relief camps were moved to temporary, semi-permanent structures in nearby towns/villages. To help families moving to such shelters, family support kits (with basic household items such as clothes, kitchen items, bedding, grocery etc.) were supplied to 250 families in different locations across 5 wards.

Phase 2 – Nutrition Support and Livelihood Restoration

As families had to continue in the temporary shelters for a relatively longer period, having a stable source of income and a regular routine emerged as the most important need.  While most of them were able to get staple food from the government sources, many expressed difficulty in accessing vegetables, milk and organizing nutrition for special groups such as elderly, women and children. Based on a detailed assessment, Rise Against Hunger India focused on these for its post-relief work. Around 2,700 persons are now being supported through 7 different set of activities as shown in the chart below:
